THE TALK

I asked for some time alone with you

They were kind to grant my request

Somehow I feel I shouldn't be here

But I was an invited guest

I had to come there was never doubt

After all you are still my 'Dad'

We'll just speak together this one time

Without shouting or getting mad

You never knew my true feelings

I know they were never spoken

Shamelessly proud in my tender youth

I know your heart must have broken

When I was small you were my hero

You were always calling me 'Runt'

And if I thought you might be watching

Foolishly I'd try any stunt

As the years past we drifted away

Really don't know when it started

Pulling hard in different directions

Until our frail bond had parted

In this world the future's never sure

Why must we always hesitate

We push the unpleasant things aside

Still convinced we can control fate

'Dad' you look good in that new gray suit

So dapper with a tie and vest

Guess I've never seen you cleaned up

Real handsome in your Sunday best

This time together has been short

And I reach down to touch your chest

I hear them returning for you now

I'll close the casket so you can rest
