THE ANNIVERSARY

The old couple rises early from bed

For this is their special day

Fifty happy years shared as man and wife

Their anniversay is today

She presses her newest gingham dress

He brushes his Sunday suit

Their children and friends will soon arrive

He smiles as he pulls on a boot

He hurriedly does his morning chores

As she prepares breakfast

The morning sun is just appearing

And summer's warm spell is cast

Early morning tasks were now complete

They donned their Sunday best

Then moved out on a front porch swing

Like two children they laughed in jest

Together in the wam morning breezes

They smiled and dreamed of the past

He grinned as she shed joyful tears

Forever he wished it could last

The sun moves higher in the sky

Still no family or guest appear

Their plan must be one to suprise

As the mid-day hour is near

The noon hour arrives with no delays

Then passes without interruption

They slowly search each others face

Was it something they'd said or done

The old man slowly enters the house

He returns the suit to it's hanger

Lovingly he smiles to his wife

Her pain fills him with anger

His eyes meet hers from across the room

A tear slips down her cheek

The joys of morning have faded now

The old woman feels tired and weak

Some things in life pass unnoticed

And other with great fanfare

Now the old couple fully understands

Sometimes they just don't care
