THE FAMILY GATHERING

On a hill covered with winter grasses

Overlooking a spring fed stream

The solemn man stood in silent thought

Spellbound by a warm winter's dream

A brisk winter wind teases his face

As dark storm clouds turn the sky gray

He watches his small children far below

Lost in the adventures of play

Spring's warm secrets were experienced here

Like a brand burned deep in one's soul

Family outings shared in summer's warm sun

Picnics on a blanket by the knoll

The thoughts grew so real within his mind

He could almost smell spring's sweet scent

Relived were sunny summer afternoons

Until all his memories were spent

He summoned the children back up the hill

They scampered to the wagon's bed

Wet cold rain spilled from heaven's gray sky

Like it did the day he was wed

He glanced down at the cold wet earth

And questions the meaning of life

He reads the inscription on the headstone

'Beloved mother, and loving wife'
