DESPAIR

Riding slowly across the meadow

That once seemed so lush and green

I weave through the early evening mists

Caressed by winds, sweet and clean

By the windbreak at the meadows edge

A steep rocky trail descends

I ease the horse over on the path

The long journey now begins

Afternoon skies surrender last light

Drab colors of pasty blue

Shadows now cloak hillside wildflowers

Soon ready for dripping dew

As I make my way down the valley

To my home on the far rim

I stop for a moment to look back

As the evening light grows dim

Unnoticed now are things in the past

Like old memories we have lost

It's an empty heart that fills me now

I realize that's the cost

I enter the yard where no one waits

She's not there like in the past

For today we buried my best friend

'God' could have taken her last
